How to create a Knowledge quiz
In this example, we’ll just start with a template where a knowledge assessment has already been created for us, and then we’ll juice it up with some Knowledge quiz mode magic.
Here’s how to get started:
1. First, navigate to the Typeform template gallery here. You’ll find our templates under Products and Templates on the Typeform website.
2. Find a template that strikes your fancy! There are plenty of templates featuring knowledge quizzes in the Typeform template gallery. In this example, we’re just browsing through some of our most popular quizzes. You can find out everything you need about using a template here.
3. Once you’ve found the template you want to work with, you can start editing it in the Content panel. By default, it’s displayed in Universal mode.
4. Click the dropdown list in the top left corner of your screen to switch to a different creation mode.
5. Select Knowledge quiz mode from the options displayed.
Tada! You’ll instantly see some changes made to your form after switching to Knowledge quiz mode. Let’s take a closer look at what these are!
When you switch to Knowledge quiz mode, four variables specific to this mode will automatically be added to your form. You can find these variables in the Workflow panel under Variables.
You can show this information to your respondents with Recall information to keep them updated about their progress while completing your form, and these variables will also be included in your individual Responses in the Results panel.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of the different Knowledge quiz variables added to your form:
- total_scorable_questions: The total number of questions that have a correct answer defined. This value might vary depending on what was included in different published versions of your form. For example, if you change the total number of scorable questions in your form by adding or removing questions, the number associated with this variable will also change in the Results panel of your form.
- correct_answers: The total number of questions answered correctly by respondents. This value will vary based on the number of correct answers given by different respondents.
- max_score: The total score of the questions that have the correct answer defined. This value might vary depending on what was included in different published versions of your form. For example, if you change the total score of your form by assigning different scores to correct answers, or by adding or removing questions, the number associated with this variable will also change in the Results panel of your form.
- quiz_score: The total score of the questions answered correctly by respondents. This value will vary based on the total score achieved by different respondents. The Score ranges feature used to show respondents different End screens based on their score also uses the quiz_score variable.
The first thing you might notice is that if your form didn’t include an Ending in Universal mode, switching to Knowledge quiz mode means that a default Ending with score ranges has been added to it.
6. Click the numbers in the Ending to open up the Score ranges menu, and add a score range. When respondents receive a score between this range, they'll be shown this Ending. Hit Save when you’re done with your selection.
You can also click + Add ending to create new Endings and set up multiple score ranges. This will let you show your respondents different Endings based on their scores.

Note! If you are using both the Knowledge quiz mode and the Scoring feature, the variable used to assign respondents to different Endings will be called quiz_score, and not score.
If your form already includes some Endings, no new Endings will be added, but the Knowledge quiz mode will populate the existing Endings with placeholders for score ranges.
An Ending screen with a message shown to your respondents after completing your quiz has also been generated for you. Here people will see their quiz score and the number of their correct answers to your quiz.
You can customize this screen however you like in the End Screen settings. Toggle the Social share icons switch, edit your Button text, or add a Button link, images, or video to your Ending.
7. Well, that’s pretty exciting! Now let’s move on to setting the correct answers for individual questions. When you select a choice type question in your quiz, you’ll see the Set correct answers option under the Question settings of your question.
8. Let’s check out how this works! Clicking Set correct answers will open up a new menu.
9. Here you can simply select the checkboxes next to the correct answers, and click Save when you’re done with your selection.
10. You can also use the Score field to assign different scores to the correct answer to each question by entering a number.

Tip! To make the quiz even more fun, you can also add different scores to different answers. For example, you can make your quiz progressively harder by giving your respondents 1 point for a correct answer to an easy question, 3 points for a medium hard question, and 5 points for a really hard one.
11. If your question has more than one correct answer, you can also select multiple options using the checkboxes in the Set correct answers menu. Don’t forget to hit Save when you’re done with your selection.

Note! If you set multiple correct answers, your respondents must choose the exact number of correct answers, and select each correct answer for their answer to be correct. No partial points are awarded. For example, if your question has four correct answers and your respondent selects three correct answers and one incorrect one, their answer will be incorrect.
After this, the Multiple selection switch in Question settings will automatically be toggled on, and the exact number of correct answers will be shown.

Tip! If you want to display multiple questions on a single page, you can also add them to a Multi-Question Page. The main advantage of this option is that your respondents will only see the correct answers after responding to all of the questions on the Multi-Question Page.

Note! The Multi-Question Page is currently not compatible with the Picture Choice question type.
If you need to edit the correct answers you've already set, click on the edit icon next to Quiz.
If you’re using a different question type in your quiz that isn’t supported with Knowledge quiz mode, the Set correct answers options won’t be available in Question settings. You can easily switch to a compatible question type by using the question type dropdown on the right hand side. For example, you can select Dropdown or Multiple Choice instead of adding a Number question.
Now that you’ve created an assessment quiz, let’s dig a little deeper into what the settings of the Knowledge quiz mode offer!
How to show your respondents the correct answers
You can take control of the respondent’s experience and decide what your respondents will see while completing your form by showing them the correct and incorrect answers to your questions.
To show your respondents the correct answers:
1. Click Form settings in the toolbar to view the settings specific to this creation mode.
Now you’ll see the Knowledge quiz settings under Quiz setup. Let’s check out what exactly these settings can do.
2. The Show correct answers and feedback after each question switch is on by default. Toggle this off if you don't want people to see the correct answer(s) to your questions immediately after they respond to them.
Here’s an example of what they’ll see when they respond incorrectly to a Picture Choice question.
As you can see, the incorrect answer is highlighted with an X, while the correct answer is highlighted with a checkmark in their choices, and they'll see real-time feedback about their answer (“Incorrect answer”).

Note! Once your respondents select their answers and click the OK button, they won’t be able to change their selection. This is to assure that respondents can’t modify their incorrect answers after seeing the correct ones. Answer selection can’t be changed even after reloading the form. Respondents can only start afresh after clearing their browser cache data or by opening the form in incognito mode.
This is what the default feedback for a correct answer looks like on a Picture Choice question.
Here’s what the default feedback looks like after a correct answer on a Multiple Choice question.
Here’s the default feedback to an incorrect answer to a Multiple Choice question.
If a question has multiple correct answers, your respondents will see all of their correct answers highlighted.
They’ll also see which of their answers are correct or incorrect if they got some of them right and some of them wrong.
3. Next, let’s toggle the Customize answer feedback switch. This will let you customize the message your respondents will see after they’ve responded to your questions.
4. Type your customized answer feedback in the Correct answer and Incorrect answers fields to change the text message your respondents will see after answering correctly or incorrectly.

Note! This customization works on the form level, which means that the same answer feedback will be shown to correct or incorrect answers to every question in the form. Your custom feedback message can be up to 100 characters long.
Here’s an example of a correct answer with some customized answer feedback:
This is an incorrect answer with the answer feedback customized.

Tip! If you want to show detailed feedback specific to each question, you can also use Branching Logic to redirect people to a different Statement question depending on their answers. This will allow you to share more varied and motivating feedback with your respondents, and you can also provide a detailed explanation of the correct answer to each of your questions.
5. You can also toggle off the Show correct answers and feedback after each question switch, if you don’t want your respondents to see the correct answers after each question while completing your form.
In this case, the Customize answer feedback toggle will also be grayed out, as no feedback will be shown.
Below is an example of the results of a Knowledge quiz on the Responses page showing the columns with Knowledge quiz variables.
