Add a "Share on WhatsApp" button to your quiz End Screens

This article shows you how to add a “Share on WhatsApp” button to each End Screen of your quiz. When respondents finish your quiz, they can click the button to share it with friends on WhatsApp. You write the messages in advance and customize them for each result, such as: “I’m The Planner! What kind of travel buddy are you?” It’s an easy way to encourage more people to take your quiz.

You'll need the Plus plan or higher to link the End Screen button to a URL. Compare our plans to see what's included in each.

How it works

WhatsApp has share links. Share links are special web addresses that open WhatsApp with a message already typed in. You create one share link for each result in your quiz, and add it to the button on that result's End Screen. When someone gets The Planner in your quiz and clicks Share on WhatsApp, WhatsApp opens with the message for The Planner, ready to send. You write the message yourself, so you decide exactly what it says for each result.

Before you start, you'll need:

  • A quiz with a separate End Screen for each result, for example, a Match quiz
  • Your form link, so friends who get the message can take the quiz too. If your quiz isn’t live yet, click Share to publish it, then copy the link from the Share panel.

Customize the WhatsApp message for each result

For each result, you create a WhatsApp message, like “I’m The Planner! What kind of travel buddy are you? [your form link]”, and build it into a WhatsApp link. You then add that link to the button on the result’s End Screen. So if your quiz has four results, you’ll create four messages and four links.

Tip! Keep messages short and positive, so people are happy to post them as they are.

You can copy your form link by clicking on the link icon in the Content panel.

Alternatively, click Share and copy it from the Share panel.

Add each message to a WhatsApp link

Links can’t contain spaces or some special characters, so first you need to convert, or “encode”, your message. For example, a space becomes %20 and a question mark becomes %3F.

For each End Screen:

  1. Paste your message into a free URL encoder, like URL Decoder/Encoder, and click Encode. Then copy the encoded text.
  2. Add the encoded text to the end of WhatsApp’s share link: https://wa.me/?text= This first part is the same for everyone. It’s WhatsApp’s standard link for sharing a message, so you only change the text after the equals sign.
  3. Paste the full link into your browser to check that it opens WhatsApp with the right message.

For example, the WhatsApp link for The Planner would look something like this:

https://wa.me/?text=I'm%20The%20Planner!%20What%20kind%20of%20travel%20buddy%20are%20you%3F%20https%3A%2F%2Fform.typeform.com%2Fto%2Fabc123

Add the share link to each End Screen

  1. In the Content panel, click the End Screen for the first result.

  1. In the settings on the right, make sure the button is toggled on, and select URL.

  1. Change the button text to something like Share on WhatsApp.

  1. Toggle on the button link and paste in the share link for that result, without the https:// at the start, for example wa.me/?text=I'm%20The%20Planner!... Typeform adds https:// for you.

  1. Repeat for each End Screen, using the share link that matches its result.

See End Screens and redirects.

Test it

  1. Click Publish edits to update your live quiz with the new buttons

  1. Take the quiz on your phone and on a computer, and get each result at least once.
  2. Click the button on each End Screen and check that the right message opens. Quiz takers will have the option to edit the message before sending to their friends.

Things to know

  • You can still use the social share icons. They share to Facebook, X, and LinkedIn, but not WhatsApp, and you can't write your own message for them. You could turn them on as well, so people can choose between WhatsApp and other networks.
  • Typeform adds https:// to the button link for you. Paste your share link starting with wa.me.
  • This uses WhatsApp's share link. If WhatsApp changes how its share links work, you may need to update yours.
