How to create a research study with Research Flow

Research Flow is Typeform’s AI-powered research assistant for both qualitative and quantitative studies. It helps teams run qualitative research faster and at scale, from setting up sessions to gathering and analyzing feedback, so more people on your team can uncover meaningful insights without needing specialized research expertise.

Instead of manually running every research session yourself, you can use Research Flow to create an AI research study that guides participants through your study. Participants can respond using video, audio, or text, and the study can ask follow-up questions when they need to clarify an answer. This helps you collect richer qualitative and quantitative feedback with less manual effort.

This guide walks you through how to create your research study from scratch, including how to train it, add tasks, and customize its design. You’ll also find links to related resources to help you get started with each part of the setup process.

Get started

To start building your research study, follow the steps below:

1. When you log into your Typeform account, click Research Flow.

2. On the left side of the screen, select which workspace you want to create your research study in.

3. Click Create research agent.

4. Choose how you would like to create your research study:

  • Create from scratch - Manually provide context, add tasks, and design your study from scratch.

We’ll select Start from scratch.

How to provide context for your study

Next, you’ll need to give your study context on what your research study is about. The more context you provide, the better the study can tailor your research study to your specific goals and requirements.

Add your research goal and project or company information to give the study additional background information. You can also customize the participants' conversation experience by choosing your study’s personality, language, and tone of voice. Finally, select how participants will respond to your research questions, using video, voice, or text.

Add tasks to your study

After you provide context to your study, you’ll be able to add tasks to your study. Tasks are the individual functions your study will perform during the research study. Tasks consist of:

  • Welcome screen - welcomes participants to the study
  • Greeting - greets participants and provides context to the study
  • Screener - filters participants based on specific criteria or requirements you set
  • Research questions - collects specific information you need from participants
  • Ending - wraps up the study with a personalized goodbye

Research questions will automatically be generated by AI after you provide context for your study. The AI-generated research questions provide a starting point for your study. You can use them as inspiration, then customize and build on them to create research questions that best fit your use case.

Additionally, you can add stimulus (an image shown to participants) to any research question and participants can answer questions based on that image. It can help respondents clearly see the product, packaging, or anything that’s being tested, making it easier for them to give honest feedback. E.g. What are your first impressions of this new shampoo packaging, and would you consider purchasing it?

To edit a question, hover over the question and click the pencil icon. Click the trash can icon to delete it.

To delete all the research questions, click the trash can icon in the Agent research questions heading.

To add more questions, type your question in the field and click the + Add button.
