A well designed research study does more than collect responses, it creates a consistent, engaging experience that builds trust with participants and reinforces your brand.
Customize key design settings in your research study by using a theme. A theme is a set of visual design settings that helps you customize the look and feel of your research study.
With a theme, you can edit the colors, fonts, add your logo, and add a background image. Themes can be applied in the following ways:
- Create custom themes from scratch
- Apply a previously created theme from studies or forms
- Apply a brand kit theme (available on Plus or higher plans)
- Apply a pre-made theme from Typeform’s gallery
Applying a theme to your research study can help create a polished and cohesive experience for your participants.

Apply a theme to your research study
1. From the Content panel of your research study, click Design.
2. Under the Gallery tab, you can select any pre-made themes from Typeform.
Under the My themes tab, you can select any theme you’ve created from a brand kit.
Scroll past your brand kit theme(s) and you can select any of your previously created themes under My themes.
Create a theme from scratch
1. Under the My themes tab, click the + button.
You can drag and drop the design window at any time to view the changes you make. Click and hold the 6 dots to move the window around.
2. To add your logo, click + Add logo under the Logo tab.
You can choose to Upload your logo, select a logo from a Brand kit, or choose a logo from My gallery.
You can upload a logo in JPG, PNG, or GIF format and up to 4MB in size.
3. Select the size and alignment of your logo. Then optionally, add any logo alt text.
Alt text will be used by screen readers to explain visuals.
Click the picture icon to change your logo or the trash can icon to delete it.
4. Click the Font tab to change the font of your research study.
Choose your font settings for:
- Font text
- Color of titles and questions
- Size and positioning of welcome screen, endings and questions
5. Click the Buttons tab.
Choose your buttons settings for:
- Color of buttons, button text, answers
- Button corner radius
6. Click the Background tab.
7. Select your background color or add a background image.
8. Give your theme a name by clicking the default name at the top of the window.
9. Click Save changes when you’re done.
Edit a theme
Clicking the 3 dot icon next to any theme gives you the option to rename, edit, duplicate, or delete your theme.
Before you edit a custom theme, keep in mind that saving your changes overwrites the existing theme, it doesn’t create a new version. After you save your edits, you can’t restore previous versions of that theme. If you want to keep the original theme, duplicate the custom theme before making changes, then edit the duplicate instead.
Additionally, if you edit a custom theme, this theme will change for all studies that are currently using it. We’ll warn you if other studies use the same theme and you can choose to proceed with editing or duplicating your theme instead.
If you choose to delete a theme that’s also used in other studies or forms, the theme will be removed from all of your studies and forms, including the ones that have already been published and will revert back to the default theme.
