Typeform AI helps you create a research study faster by generating a tailored starting point for your study. Instead of building from scratch, you can describe your research goals and project context, and Typeform AI will create a study with AI-generated research questions based on your inputs.
With a research study, you can run conversational research sessions where participants respond in text, audio, or video. The study can also ask follow-up questions to help participants clarify their answers, so you can collect richer qualitative feedback at scale.
In this article, you’ll learn how to use Typeform AI to create a research study, review the generated questions, and refine the setup before recruiting participants for your study.
If you prefer to create your study from scratch, check out this article about how to create a study from scratch.

Write a stronger first prompt
The more useful context you give Typeform AI, the better the first version of your research study is likely to be. If your first prompt is too short or vague, Typeform AI will need to ask follow-up questions before it can generate a strong draft.
A simple way to get better results is to include the 7 things Typeform AI is most likely to need:
- Your research goal
- Your target audience
- The decision this study should inform
- Prior context or what you already know
- The hypothesis or assumption you want to test
- Any must-have topics or questions
- Any screening needs, including who should and should not participate
You can use this template:
“Create a research study for [target audience]. The goal is to learn [research goal]. This study should help us decide [decision this study should inform]. We already know [prior context]. We want to test whether [hypothesis]. Make sure the study covers [must-have topics or questions]. Screen for [who should participate] and exclude [who should not participate].”
Weak prompt:
“Create a research study about onboarding.”
Stronger prompt:
“You’re a UX researcher. Create a research study for new customers who finished onboarding in the last 30 days. The goal is to understand which parts of the setup felt confusing, what nearly stopped them from completing onboarding, and which moments helped them feel confident. This study should help us decide what to simplify in the onboarding flow next. We already know that many users drop off during workspace setup, but we don’t yet know why. We want to test whether unclear instructions and too many decisions early on are the main causes of drop-off. Make sure the study covers expectations, friction, confidence, and missing information. Screen for people who completed onboarding recently and exclude people who haven’t used the product yet.”
Typeform AI may still ask a couple of follow-up questions. That’s expected. It uses those questions to turn your initial brief into a stronger study setup.
If you reuse the same company, audience, or project context often, save it in Typeform AI Memory so you don’t need to repeat it every time.
Use Typeform AI to create your research study
1. Log in to your Typeform account and click Research Flow.
2. Select the workspace where you want to create your research study.
3. Click Create research agent.
4. In the Typeform AI box that appears, describe your research goal, your target audience, the decision this study should inform, any prior context or assumptions you already have, and any must-have topics. Then let Typeform AI create your research study by tapping the Enter key on your keyboard.
The more clearly you explain what you want to learn, the better Typeform AI can tailor the first version of your study — but don’t worry, you can review and edit your study later if needed.
Tip! Save reusable context like your company description, brand tone, or ideal customer profile in Typeform AI Memory so Typeform AI can create more relevant results without you needing to repeat the same background every time.

If your first prompt is brief or missing context, Typeform AI may ask follow-up questions before it generates the first draft.
7. Typeform AI will then guide you through creating your research study, asking you follow-up questions to better understand your research goals, project context, and the type of study you want to run.
8. Typeform AI will generate a first version of your research study based on the context you provided. Once your study is ready, click View agent.
Rename your study
Click on your study’s name to rename it.
Then click Save.
Review and refine your study’s tasks
Typeform AI creates the first version of your research study for you, including a Welcome screen, Greeting, Research questions, and Ending. Once your study is ready, review each part of the study in the builder and make any changes needed for your use case.
To review and refine a task, click on it in the left sidebar.
Review the Welcome screen
Typeform AI adds a Welcome screen to introduce participants to your study.
You can edit the text directly in the builder.
And you can change the button text or add an image or video from the Settings sidebar.
Review the Greeting
The Greeting sets the context for your study and starts the session with participants.
You can choose what the AI-generated greeting includes, such as a brief introduction to your company or project, a brief introduction to your research, or a prompt asking for the participant’s first name.
You can also add custom instructions to guide how the greeting should be presented.
Review the Research questions
Typeform AI also generates a first set of research questions based on the context you provided. These questions give you a starting point for your study, and you can refine them to better fit your use case.
If the first draft feels too broad or misses something important, keep refining it. For example, you can:
- Make the questions more neutral.
- Add more depth on a specific topic.
- Shorten the study.
- Adapt it for voice, video, or text responses.
- Remove leading or repetitive wording.
To update a question, hover over the question and click the pencil icon. Click the trash can icon to delete it.
To delete all the research questions, click the trash can icon in the Agent research questions heading.
To add a new question, type your question in the field and click the + Add button.
You can also add stimulus to a research question so participants can react to an image during the session. This can be useful when you want feedback on something visual, such as packaging, branding, or another concept.
Review the Ending
The Ending wraps up the session with a personalized AI-generated sign-off tailored to the context of the session.
You can customize the experience by adding custom instructions, including a button, or adding an image or video.
Add extra tasks if needed
If you want to qualify participants before they begin the study, you can manually add a Screener task after your study is created. Typeform AI doesn’t currently support creating screener questions during setup.
For more detailed information about adding and editing tasks, check out our article on how to add tasks to your research study.
Customize the design of your study
Use themes to customize the look of your research study and match it to your brand. You can change your study’s:
- Background color
- Text color
- Button color
- Button radius
- Logo
- Font
- Background image
Click the Design button and select the theme you want to apply to your research agent.
You can choose from the following:
- Brand kit themes - themes you’ve created from your brand kit’s assets
- My themes - custom themes you’ve already created from scratch
- Gallery - Typeform’s library of prebuilt themes
The themes you’ve previously created for forms can also be reused on a research study.
Check out our article for instructions on how to design your study.
Give context to your study
Typeform AI has already given context on what your research study is about. If you want to adjust any of these settings manually click Train.
Add your research goal and project or company information to give the study additional background information. You can also customize the participants' session experience by choosing a personality, language, and tone of voice. You can also select how participants will respond to your research questions, using video, voice, or text.
Learn more about how to train and provide context to your study.
Before recruiting participants, click Preview to test the research study experience and check that each part of the session feels clear and works as expected for participants.
Once you’re happy with your research study, click the Share button to publish it.
Current limitations
We’re continuing to improve the Typeform AI setup experience. At the moment, Typeform AI can’t do the following during setup:
- Accept a list of questions and create them one-for-one
- Accept a file upload
- Create screener questions
- Upload stimuli directly to research questions
- Add branding to your study
After your study is created, you can still review and refine the generated questions, add stimuli, create a Screener task manually, and add branding in the builder.
