Important! Messages is a legacy feature only available if you've signed up to Typeform before May 20, 2026. If you don't see messages in your account, you can use Automations based on Form submissions to send emails instead. We'll be updating messages to be part of Automations, so we recommend switching to Automations based on Form submissions.
To make it easier to get started with Forms submission automations, you can now import your legacy Messages as Automations.
You can import all existing messages as individual automations for each of your forms.
Read on to find out how to import all your existing messages as individual automations for each of your forms.
Automations are available as an add-on feature on the Plus, Business, Talent, Growth Custom, and Enterprise plans. If you're on a Growth Custom or Enterprise plan, contact your CSM for the Contacts and Automations add-on.
The Contacts & Automations add-on is included in the Growth Flow plan at no extra cost.
- You can import your legacy Messages into Automations without purchasing the Contacts & Automations add-on, but you can only activate your imported Automations once you have the add-on.
- Sending emails from your Gmail account is not supported by automations: Messages connected to your Gmail address will be sent from the notifications@followups.typeform.io domain after importing them into Automations.
- If you've set up sending messages to Slack with the legacy Messages feature, you’ll need to reauthenticate Slack when switching to Automations.
-
You can set up a custom email domain on your account after importing your Messages into Automations.
- Once a custom email domain has been connected, the sender address will default to the custom email domain configured on your account.
- You can then send on brand automations by updating the sender name of your email.
Here are the most important things you need to know before importing Messages into Automations:
- Importing works per form: Importing is limited to a single form’s Messages. You can’t import Messages in bulk import across all forms in an account into Automations.
- Importing works per trigger: Each trigger set up in form Messages will be imported as a separate Automation. For example, if a form has three Messages triggers set up, it will be imported as three separate Automations.
- Automations are imported as drafts: Messages will be imported into Automations as draft Automations. You must review and activate imported Automations to make them live. No payment is required to import Messages, but you will need the Contacts & Automations add-on to activate imported Automations.
- Original Messages will keep running: The original Messages set up will continue running after importing them into Automations. You must manually turn off the Messages you’ve imported into Automations to avoid sending duplicates.
- Imports will be auto-named in Automations: Messages imported into Automations will be renamed automatically using the following naming convention: Messages for [form title] - [action] (for example, Messages for Customer Survey - Send Email).

FAQ
Will my existing Messages stop running when I import them into Automations?
No. The original Messages will continue running until you manually turn them off. This is to avoid any gaps in delivery during the migration process. Make sure to deactivate the original Message once you’ve confirmed that the imported Automation is working.
Can I import Messages across multiple forms at once?
No, currently you can only import Messages into Automations on a form basis. For example, if you have five Messages set up across five forms, you’ll have to import them five times, once for each form.
Why did one of my Messages become multiple Automations after importing?
This is because the original Message had multiple triggers. Automations are built around single-trigger flows, so each trigger will be imported as its own Automation.
Why is my imported Automation using a different sender than my original Message?
This happens when the original Message was sent from a Gmail account. Sending Automations from a Gmail sender is not supported in Automations, and imported Automations will default to the Typeform email domain (notifications@followups.typeform.io). If you have a custom email domain configured on your account already, you can use that when importing Messages into Automations instead.
Do I need to purchase the Contacts & Automations add-on to import Messages into Automations?
No. You can import Messages into Automations on any plan, including Free. Automations will be imported as drafts, and can be reviewed without an active add-on.
Do I need to purchase the Contacts & Automations add-on to activate an imported Automation?
Yes. Publishing an Automation requires an active Contacts & Automations add-on. You can follow the standard upgrade flow from the publish screen to purchase the add-on.
Are Slack actions fully migrated into Automations?
Slack actions will be imported from Messages into Automations. However, you will need to re-authenticate your Slack account in the imported Automation to activate it. You can find out more about sending Automations to Slack channels here.
Are Webhook actions fully migrated into Automations?
Yes. Webhooks will be imported into Automations without any re-authentication required. Find out more about sending webhook automations here.
Does importing Messages into Automations copy them or move them?
Importing Messages into Automations will copy them into Automations. This means that the original Message will stay in place and keep running until you turn it off.
How can I undo an import from Messages into Automations?
Messages are imported into Automation as drafts. This means that you can simply delete imported Messages from your Automations. The original Message will be unaffected, and you can import it again as many times as you want.
When Messages are imported into Automations, will they include email performance metrics from before the import?
No. The Automation will only start tracking email performance metrics from the moment it's published from a custom email domain.
