Email metrics show you how your automation emails are performing. On each Send email step, you can see delivery, open, and click rates for the last 7 days, so you can quickly understand what’s working and where to improve your forms and flows.
What you can track
On every Send email step in an automation, you’ll see three metrics:
- Delivery rate – the percentage of sent emails that were successfully delivered to recipients’ inboxes.
- Open rate – the percentage of delivered emails that were opened at least once.
- Click rate – the percentage of delivered emails where a button with a URL was clicked.
All three metrics:
- Use a rolling 7-day window of activity.
- Are calculated for each Send email step as a whole (not per individual contact or per edit of the email).
What you’ll need
To see email metrics in Automations, you’ll need:
- The Contacts & Automations add-on, available on eligible paid plans.
- An automation with a Send email action (for example, from a form submission or contact update).
- A custom email domain set up and verified in your Typeform account (including DNS verification).

Note! Email metrics are only available for automations sent from a custom, verified email domain. If you don’t have one set up and send emails from the shared Typeform domain notifications@followups.typeform.io, email metrics won’t be tracked.
Where you’ll see email metrics
Follow these steps to find email metrics for a Send email step:
- From your Workspace, click Automations.
- Make sure the status of the automation you want to check is Active. Metrics only appear on automations that are Active, not on drafts or inactive flows.
- Click on the name of the automation to open it.
- In the workflow, find the Send email step you want to review.
- Hover over the metric icons at the bottom of the Send email step to see delivery, open, and click rates for the last 7 days.
Metrics are calculated per email step, so if you use the same email content in multiple automations or steps, each step has its own metrics. Metrics only appear when the automation is Active – you won’t see them on draft or inactive automations.
Click rate will only be displayed if the email contains a button with a URL.
What each metric means
Delivery rate
Delivery rate shows the percentage of sent emails that were successfully delivered to recipients’ inboxes.
Open rate
Open rate shows the percentage of delivered emails that were opened at least once.
- Opens are tracked using an invisible pixel in the email body.
- Some email clients block proxy tracking pixels, so not every real open is counted. Open rates are best used for relative comparisons rather than as an exact count of who opened your email.
Click rate
Click rate shows the percentage of delivered emails where someone clicked a button with a URL in the email.
- Click rate only appears if your email includes at least one button with a URL, and it counts clicks on buttons only (not text links).
- If you add multiple buttons to an email, the clicks are aggregated into a single click rate for that email step. There’s currently no per-button breakdown.
Troubleshooting FAQ
Why don’t I see any metrics on my email step?
If you don’t see metrics on a Send email step:
- Make sure your automation is Active.
- Check that the email is being sent from a custom, verified domain, not notifications@followups.typeform.io.
- Confirm that the automation has sent emails in the last 7 days – performance outside this window isn’t shown.
- For the click rate, make sure your email includes a button with a URL.
Why is my open rate so low (or different from what I expect)?
Some email clients block or proxy tracking pixels, so not every real open is counted. Open rates are best used for relative comparisons rather than as an exact count of who opened your email.
Why do my metrics stay the same after I edit my email?
Metrics are tied to the email step, not to a particular version of the email. If you want to start tracking from scratch after changing your content, delete the step and recreate it in your automation.
Why do metrics only show the last 7 days?
Email metrics use a rolling 7-day window of activity per step. Longer historical ranges aren’t currently supported.
I have several buttons with links in my email. Can I see which specific button was clicked?
No. Currently, all button clicks are combined into a single click rate for that email step.
Why is my delivery rate very low or briefly above 100%?
Very low delivery rates can point to issues like invalid email addresses or temporary problems on recipients’ mail servers. In rare cases, you might briefly see a delivery rate slightly above 100% right after an email is sent. This is a known, short-lived timing quirk and it should correct itself within a few seconds, without any action needed from you.
