How to use "reverse logic" with blank fields

You can use Logic to send respondents down different paths depending on whether they answer a question or leave it blank.

For example, you might want to:

  • Send respondents who answer question 1 in your form to question 4.
  • Send respondents who leave question 1 in your form blank to a different question.

The clearest way to set this up is to use a negative condition in your Logic setup and define what should happen in all other cases. Keep reading to learn how.

Set up reverse logic

1. Open the Workflow tab and select Logic.

2. Click on the question you want to set up the Logic for in the left side menu, then select Branching and + Add branching rule.

3. Set up the rule as follows:

  • Set the Go to destination as the question where respondents who enter an answer will go. In our example, this is question 4.
  • Select is not equal to as the condition.
  • Leave the value field blank.
  • Under All other cases go to, select the question you want respondents to see if they leave question 1 blank. In our example, this is question 2.

Save your Logic rule and preview your form to check it works as expected. Once everything is set up as you want, share it with your audience.

Our logic will work like this:

  • Question 1 has an answer: the respondent goes to question 4.
  • Question 1 is blank: the respondent goes to the destination you selected under All other cases go to. In our example, this is question 2.

Why use this setup?

If you try to save a rule that uses a positive condition with a blank field, you’ll see an error message.

A blank field doesn’t contain a value for Logic to compare against. Using is not equal to tells Logic to follow the main path when the respondent has entered an answer. The All other cases go to option provides the alternative path for blank answers.
