How to create an employee satisfaction survey

Employee satisfaction is a key driver of productivity, retention, and company culture. Understanding how employees feel about their jobs is essential for building a positive and high-performing workplace, and one of the most effective ways to gain this insight is through a well-designed employee satisfaction survey.

These surveys help organizations measure how happy employees are across several key areas: work environment, compensation/benefits, opportunities for growth and development, and work-life balance. By gathering honest feedback in these areas, People Operation teams can identify strengths and uncover areas that need improvement.

With Typeform, you can create a personalized employee satisfaction survey and easily analyze the results you collect.

In this article, we’ll walk you through how to create an effective employee satisfaction survey with Typeform, that delivers meaningful insights and drives real change.

How to build your survey

You can build your survey in many different ways: using a template, importing your questions, creating with AI, or starting from scratch. In this article, we’ll build our form from scratch.

1. Log into your Typeform account and click + Create a new form in your workspace.

2. Click Start from scratch.

Group 789.png3. A list of form elements will appear. We’ll select Welcome Screen to start our employee satisfaction survey with an introduction.

4. In the Welcome Screen, edit the text to explain the purpose of your employee satisfaction survey and provide context on why completing this survey is important.

You can adjust your Welcome Screen’s settings in the right side panel. Toggle on Time to complete, Number of submissions, edit the button text, and add an image or video to make it more eye-catching.

5. Give your form a title. Click on the default title in the top left corner and rename your form.

A pop up will appear where you can rename your form. Then click Save.

6. Click + Add content to add a question to your form.

You can start your survey with some general questions, such as:

  • What department do you work in?
  • How long have you been working with us?

We’ll select the Dropdown question type for our question, What department do you work in?

Then click Add choices to add your answer options.

Next, we’ll add a Multiple Choice question to ask How long have you been working with us? Then add in your answer options.

Later on, after you’ve collected survey responses, you can filter and analyze your results by department or employee tenure.

7. Add your employee satisfaction questions. Make sure to select the question type that best matches the type of question you’re asking.

Here is a list of suggested employee satisfaction questions:

  • Do you enjoy our company’s culture?
  • How likely are you to recommend our company as a great place to work?
  • Do you clearly understand our company’s strategic objectives?
  • Are you satisfied with your job overall?
  • What aspects of your job do you find most rewarding?
  • Do you think work is fairly distributed across teams?
  • Do you feel your work is respected and valued?
  • How likely are you to look for another job outside our company?
  • How satisfied are you with your salary?
  • How satisfied are you with the benefits our company offers?
  • How competitive do you feel your salary and benefits are compared to similar jobs?

You can ask questions individually, or, if your rating options are the same across multiple questions, you can use the Matrix question type.

8. If you have an open ended question, you can use the Clarify with AI question type to gather more detailed and higher quality information.

Clarify with AI uses generative AI to ask up to two personalized clarification questions based on your respondent’s initial answer to an open-ended question.

9. Lastly, you can ask for any additional feedback with a video question. We’ll use the Long Text question type to let employees enter in their own words any feedback they would like to provide. Asking a question in video format gives your survey a more personal touch and allows you to connect with your employees in a human way.

Click the Video option on the right side panel, and click Add video to record or upload a video asking for any additional feedback.

10. Add an End Screen to thank employees for filling out the survey.

Click the + button next to Endings and then edit the text.

Create a theme for your form to match your company

To change the color palette, font, background image and logo on your form, you’ll need to create a theme. You can create your own custom theme or use one of Typeform’s pre-designed themes. Learn how to create and apply a theme to your form here.

If you’re on a Plus or higher plan, you can add brand assets and visuals to a Brand kit. Members of your organization will be able to access the brand assets and visuals within a Brand kit and apply them to a form, making it easy for everyone to create a form that stays on brand. Learn more about Brand kits here.

Share your survey

Make sure to click the Share/Publish edits button to make your form live before sending it out.

You’ll then be taken to the Share panel, where you can see all the different options for sharing your form.

The easiest way to share your form is with a link or a QR code. Learn more about sharing your form here.

Analyze your results

After you’ve collected responses to your form, you can view them in the Results panel.

In your Results summary, you can see an overview of how your employees answered each of your questions. To get to your Results Summary, click Results and then click Summary.

You can view individual responses in the Responses tab.

You can also filter your results to see how different groups answered your survey. For example, you can filter your responses by department or by tenure.

For further insights, you can try using the Smart Insights tab.

Smart Insights will help you analyze your results with topic detection and sentiment analysis for open-ended questions. Close-ended questions will be interpreted into charts with key points for quick analysis. You can also use Ask AI to pose questions and extract insights from the responses you’ve collected. Learn more about Smart Insights here.

Employee satisfaction doesn’t have to be static. Regularly repeating the survey—whether quarterly, biannually, or annually—allows you to track changes over time, monitor the impact of initiatives, and stay aligned with your company’s evolving needs. You can compare your results over time and see where you’ve improved and where some work is needed.
