Setting up video and audio answers
1. Navigate to your Workspace and open an existing form or create a new one. Click + Add content.
2. Select Video and Audio from the menu.
3. If you want to ask your audience your question in text format, go ahead and type it directly into the editor.
4. However, to encourage respondents to answer with video, we suggest recording a video question yourself. Choose the Video option from the Question settings on the right-hand sidebar. You can learn more about recording a video question here.
5. By default, the video answer option (Record your answer) will be enabled. If you would like to give your respondents the option to answer in audio, or in text format, you can toggle on Audio or Allow text answer in the Question settings.
6. Add any additional questions to your form as needed.
7. When you’re happy with how your form looks, click the Share/Publish edits button and share it with the world.
Respondent experience
1. When respondents reach a question that allows video and audio answers, they can choose to answer via video, audio, or text (if you've enabled them).
Each video or audio answer can be up to 2 minutes long. Text answers have no character limit.
2. If they opt for video or audio, they may need to grant Typeform permissions to use their camera and microphone by clicking Request permissions. Or if they want to upload a pre-recorded video instead, they can click Upload your answer to select their video file. The maximum file size they can upload is 500MB.
And then Allow.
3. They'll see a recording screen. At the top, they can click on the settings button to select their preferred camera and microphone.
If they decide that they would like to upload a pre-recorded video instead, they can click the upload video button. Then they can select the video file from their device.
4. To start recording, they’ll need to click the red button and will see a 3-second countdown.
Each video or audio answer can be up to 2 minutes long. Respondents will be guided to stay in the middle of the shot by the red side panels. A timer will count down at the bottom of the screen to let respondents know how long they have left.
5. When they’ve finished recording, respondents can click the red Finish button.
6. They can preview their video and check the audio quality. If satisfied, they can click Continue, or Retry to have another go.
7. They can then proceed to the next question or Submit their form if this is the last question.
Mobile users can also record video responses directly from their devices.
Viewing video and audio answers in your Responses
1. Head to the Results panel and click Responses.
2. You’ll see the auto-generated transcript displayed in your responses.
3. Click Watch video answer or Listen to audio answer to view the full recording. From here, you can also turn on closed captions and make the video full-screen.
Note! Automated closed captions are currently only available in English.
4. You can also click Download video or Download audio to download the video or audio answer your respondent has sent you in MP4 file format. The title of the downloaded file will include the name of your form and the Response ID of the response.
Tip! If you're looking for a specific answer, you can use the search bar in Responses to search for keywords in the transcript.
FAQ
What’s the maximum time limit for video or audio answers?
Each video or audio answer can be up to 2 minutes long. Currently, this limit cannot be adjusted.
Why can’t I add video and audio answers to my form?
This feature requires a subscription to one of our Growth or Talent plans.
How many video and audio answers can I collect?
A video and audio answer is counted whenever a respondent submits a video or audio response, regardless of how long or short the video/audio recording is. A video or audio answer can be submitted either from submitting the entire form or from a partial response that includes the video/audio answer.
The number of monthly video/audio answers you can collect will depend on your plan. The Growth Essentials and Growth Pro plans have a set number of video/audio answers you can collect monthly. Take a look at our plans & pricing page for more information on how many video/audio answers you can collect.
If you're on the Growth Custom plan, please reach out to your Customer Success Manager or our Sales team to confirm the specific limits on your plan.
Can I stop respondents from answering with text? I only want them to answer with video.
Yes, by default, only video responses will be enabled on your form. You can toggle text responses to be on or off in your question settings.
Can respondents upload a pre-recorded video?
Yes, when they select the video answer option, they can click Upload your answer on the video permissions screen. Or when they're on the video recording screen, they can click on the upload video button at the top of the screen. The maximum file size they can upload is 500MB.
Can I download video and audio answers and connect them to the API/integrations?
This isn't currently possible, but stay tuned for updates.
Why do I see "This answer failed to process because of an unexpected error" in my responses?
You could see this message in your responses if the respondent didn't upload their video answer properly. This usually happens when the respondent closes their browser while their video is still being uploaded.
Why are respondents able to move on to the next question if their video hasn't been uploaded yet?
Respondents are able to move on to the next question in the form to help increase form submissions. They can continue answering the form while their video uploads, preventing them from leaving their browser before submitting their responses.
If a video answer is still being uploaded when the respondent clicks the final submit button, we display a message telling the respondent to not close this tab, their form is being submitted. If the respondent ignores this message, the response will be received without their video answer.
